uganda

Winston Churchill called Uganda 'the pearl of Africa’, presumably basing his opinion on the country’s great natural beauty. From the moment the visitor lands at Entebbe’s international airport, with its breathtaking equatorial location on the forested shore of island-strewn Lake Victoria, it is clear that Uganda is no ordinary safari destination. Uganda is where the East African savannah meets the West African jungle. In this lush country, one can observe lions prowling the open plains, track chimpanzees through the rain forest undergrowth, then navigate tropical channels teeming with hippos and crocs before setting off into the misty mountains to stare deep into the eyes of a mountain gorilla.

The most profound attraction in Uganda are the silver-back and black-back Mountain Gorillas, as well as other primates including chimpanzees and Golden Monkeys, all found in Bwindi Impenetrable Forests, Mgahinga National Park and on Ngamba Island. The mighty volcanic and non-volcanic mountains are a major attraction for hiking activities. With almost a third of the country covered by water, the fresh water lakes offer opportunities for water activities and sports. Lake Victoria, the largest in Africa, dominates the southern border of the country and offers sport fishing, sailing and lake cruises. The Eastern region is a must visit for all water activities and adventurous visitors with boat rides, white water rafting, bungee jumping in a variety of destinations. Increasingly popular for adventurers is white water rafting on the River Nile.

rwanda

Also known as 'the land of a thousand hills’, Rwanda is a landlocked country of lovely and various landscapes. The Virunga volcanic mountains have high altitude forests, world-famous mountain gorillas, and Lake Kivu offers beautiful beaches, jutting peninsulas and an archipelago of islands. Many visitors have been surprised by the fact that Rwandans are now harmoniously living together only 15 years after the genocide that threatened to shatter the social fabric of the country. Rwandans are not only living together today but they are striving to be recognized as one people.

Parc National des Volcans in the Virunga volcanoes is home to the mountain gorillas to which Dian Fossey dedicated her life. Nyungwe Forest is one of the largest montane forests in Central Africa and is renowned for its large troops of Columbus monkeys, chimpanzees, tracking of the elusive golden monkey and rich variety of orchids that can be seen on a nature walk within this tropical rain forest. There is a variety of wildlife including the Akagera National Park, the only Savannah park in the country with large herds of elephant emerging from the woodland, hippo and crocodile around the lake. Rwanda has a rich culture with its second city, Butare, having one of the finest cultural museums in Africa or visit one of the genocide memorial sites where victims killed in Kigali are remembered and on its outskirts are buried.

TANZANIA

Tanzania is home to some of Africa’s most alluring destinations. The Serengeti’s wildebeest migration along an infinite savanna; the incongruous snow of Mt Kilimanjaro – Africa’s tallest mountain at 5,895m (19,341ft); the crater bottom of Ngorongoro National Park teaming with wildlife; the Swahili coast and pristine beaches along the spice islands of Zanzibar where fishermen still plough the turquoise waters in traditional wooden sailboats; Selous – Africa’s largest protected area and larger than Switzerland; Ruaha and Katavi – insider tips for serious safari-goers; Mahale and Gombe – prime destinations for seeing chimpanzees in the wild.

Throughout, Tanzania offers travelers an array of options, set against the backdrop of a cultural mosaic. Tanzania’s coastline was a favored stop on ancient trading routes between the Indian sub-continent and the Middle-East. Spices, jewels and slaves once passed through, bringing with them a melange of cultural riches that remain today. The language of Swahili was born here, and old mosques, coral palaces and pearly-white beaches still remain. While most visitors head straight for the famed northern wildlife-watching circuit, followed by time relaxing on Zanzibar’s beaches, Tanzania has much more to offer anyone with the time and inclination to head off the beaten path.
